Data Centers:
The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme of the "Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission" (IOC) of UNESCO was established in 1961. Its purpose is to enhance marine research, exploitation and development, by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information between participating Member States, and by meeting the needs of users for data and information products.
The IODE system forms a worldwide service oriented network consisting of National Oceanographic Data Centers (NODCs) and Designated National Agencies (DNAs) and works closely with the World Data Centers – Oceanography. During the past 40 years, IOC Member States have established over 70 oceanographic data centers in as many countries. This network has been able to collect, control the quality of, and archive millions of ocean observations, and makes these available to Member States.
International network of data archiving centers in different disciplines, including Oceanography. Some centers are "mirrored" at multiple sites around the world.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) coordinates and promotes marine research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and on living marine resources in the North Atlantic. Scientists working through ICES gather information about the marine ecosystem, the data from this is held at the ICES Data Centre which is a cross-discipline department with expertise in fisheries, oceanography and the marine environment, which includes some of the largest databases in the world on these subjects.
The ICES Data Centre manages data submissions and guidelines and developing tools and products to facilitate the use of the data by end users ranging from scientists to policy makers.
